Modo Car Sharing Co-op

Join our Modo Plan

The GSS holds a group membership in Modo, which provides an affordable means to enjoy the co-op for UVic graduate students.

What does this mean for you?

Modo provides members with access to a fleet of vehicles on an as-needed basis, and bills members monthly based on their usage. Typically “member-owners” purchase a $500 share in the co-op, which is refunded when relinquishing your membership.

Those who join through the GSS do not need to purchase a share in the co-op, but rather pay a one-time non-refundable fee of $25, which provides access at the same rates as “member-owners”.

Unlike the $500 share purchase, however, the $25 is non-refundable, but provides you with access for as long as you are registered as a graduate student and are still needing/using the service.

The price list for members is available here. Students who join through the GSS get the lower “Modo Plus” rates, rather than the higher rates paid by “monthly members”.

There are several Modos parked on or close to the UVic campus. Many other vehicles are located in neighbourhoods around Victoria. Driving rates for different vehicles are available on the Modo website.

More introduction information can be found on Modo’s website and in their Carsharing Handbook.

Space on the GSS Modo list is limited, so students may be waitlisted. Students who are waitlisted may want to consider purchasing a private membership to Modo while on the waitlist. GSS car co-op membership lasts for the duration of your studies.

The GSS conducts an audit each term to ensure that students who are no longer eligible to be on our list (e.g. who have graduated, are not registered for the term, or are not using the service), are removed to make room for students on our waitlist in need of the service.

For more information, or to join the GSS Carshare Program, please contact the GSS Office at gssoffice@uvic.ca

Frequently Asked Questions

To be eligible to join Modo through the GSS, you will need to provide driving records that on their own or in combination (e.g. two different jurisdictions) provide 2 years of driving history. If your records are in another language, you will need to have them translated with an ICBC approved translator.

Other eligibility conditions:

  • Be 19+ years of age
  • Have an N license or better or the equivalent from another jurisdiction (non-BC licenses are welcome) — you have to be allowed to drive alone in the car.
  • Have had no license suspensions or prohibitions within the past two years
  • Have not received six or more driver penalty points (or equivalent demerit points) in the past two years
  • Have not been charged with, or convicted of, any Major Traffic Violation

After you have signed up, confirmed your eligibility to join, and paid the non-refundable $25 fee to the GSS, we will connect you with Modo. The steps below will be emailed to you along with Modo’s Partner User Agreement.

  • Go to Modo’s online sign up platform and click the red “Join Modo” button.
  • When choosing a membership type, choose: “I am applying to drive on an organization’s account”. Please enter “UVic GSS” in the ‘organization name’ field.
  • Follow the steps, which include having ICBC send your driving record and claims history directly to Modo. FAQ and a next-step guide can be found here. The online sign-up platform includes a link to the ICBC website where you can order your documents. If you held a driver’s License outside of BC during the last 2 years please provide your driving record from your Previous Jurisdiction. Note: if you are unable to provide driving records that on their own or in combination (e.g. records from different jurisdictions) show 2 years of driving history, you may not be eligible for the GSS Partnership program with Modo.
  • Read, sign and return the Partnership User Agreement (attached). Scan and email it to business@modo.coop. (Note: The first question on the Partnership User Agreement asks you for an account number. As you are just making an account, you will not yet have one – please just write “UVic GSS” here.)
  • Be sure to review the materials that will help make carsharing work well for you:
Carsharing Handbook – describes the terms and conditions that affect all Modo Members.  The
Modo Plus rates are at the bottom of the page here. Note, as a Partner User you will have access the Modo Plus rates without the share purchase.

If you’re new to BC, and/or have an out of province license, please check all of Modo’s FAQ’s  and review all the information below before paying the non-refundable $25 to sign up through the GSS.

If you have held a license issued Outside BC

  • Request your driving record for the past 2 years from your non-BC license issuer (translated by an ICBC-approved translator if not in English). Visit ICBC’s website for more information on moving to BC with a foreign license or contact your local embassy to find out how to obtain your driving records and/or history from outside Canada. Please note, some issuers may charge a fee to obtain your records, which Modo does not reimburse.
  • As the GSS holds a Modo Plus Plan, if you are unable to obtain your driving documentation from the non-BC license issuer, you can still join Modo. In this case, you must follow these steps:
    • Print and fill out by hand our Member Eligibility Declaration (MED).
    • Scan and save your completed declaration as a PDF.
    • Send a clear photo of your driver’s license AND another photo of you holding the license. If your driver’s licence does not have a photo, take a clear photo of it along with a clear photo of another form of government-issued photo ID, and a clear photo of you holding that government issued photo ID.

After you received your driving document or completed Modo’s MED:

  • Email all your documents to info@modo.coop
  • After emailing, contact us at info@modo.coop or call 1-604-685-1393 so we can review your submission and issue your membership number.
  • Follow the instructions to purchase your $500 worth of shares via electronic bill payment if you’re on the Modo Plus membership. This share is fully redeemable if you decide to leave Modo.

Note: If you’ve had both a BC license and an out-of-province license in the last two years, follow both processes above (first request your outside BC license and then your BC one).

For the first part of joining Modo under the GSS Plan — you just need to confirm you have these documents, fill out our application form, and pay the non-refundable $25 fee to our office.

Once we connect you with Modo, you will need the following:

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Driving abstract for the past 2 years (in BC, this is called your Personal Driving Record)
  • Valid credit card in your name / readiness to make an electronic bill payment, depending on your application type.

If you have a license Issued in BC:

  • Contact ICBC through their online form and ask them to send copies of your Personal Driving Record for the past 2 years to info@modo.coop. Even if you don’t have 2 years experience, request records for that duration.

If you have held a license issued Outside BC, see the above FAQ, ‘I’m new to BC/My driving record is from another province/country’

Note: If you’ve had both a BC license and an out-of-province license in the last two years, follow both processes above (first request your outside BC license and then your BC one).

Final Steps:

  • Once Modo receives your payment and all documents, they’ll review and let you know if we need anything else.
  • If you encounter any issues during the application,  contact Modo, and they’ll guide you through.

Once you have signed up through us, you can stay on the list as long as you are using the service, and as long as you are a registered graduate student at UVic.

Please inform us if you no longer need the service. We conduct audits each term, but the sooner we know we can add someone else to the list, the sooner that student is able to use the service
