GSS Executive Board Positions
Chair
The Chair acts as the official spokesperson of the Society. The Chair is the primary liaison between the Society and the University administration and external political bodies. Internally, the Chair heads up the Executive Council and the Graduate Representative Council.
Director of Student Life
The Director of Student Life is responsible for planning GSS-sponsored activities and coordinates social, recreational, academic, and professional events with on-campus partners. The Director of Student Life chairs the Events Committee and sits on Club’s Council and the University’s Orientation Committee.
Director of Finance
The Director of Finance works with the Executive Director and the Finance Committee to prepare the annual budget for the Society and to ensure the financial health of the GSS. They assist in day-to-day operations, review all Society contracts, and sign the cheques.
Director of External Relations
The Director of External Relations is responsible for coordinating advocacy campaigns targeting all levels of government and off-campus partners, supporting the Chair in communications with media outlets, preparing public statements to members on matters related to advocacy campaigns, and provide support, guidance, and direction to volunteers, GRC reps, and members on advocacy campaigns. They chair the Advocacy and Campaigns Committee.
Director of Internal/University Relations
The Director of Internal/University Relations acts as the primary liaison with members of UVic administration, and between the members of the Executive Board and the University’s Senate and Board of Governors, Faculty of Graduate Studies, and Graduate Executive Committee. They are responsible for coordinating campaigns as directed by the Board which target UVic, and supporting our University partners in providing an annual grad student research day. They serve as Vice-Chair of the Appeals Committee and the Advocacy and Campaigns Committee.
Candidate for Chair
Sarah Roberts
Dear Graduate Students,
My name is Sarah Roberts (she/her). I am a PhD student in Art History and Visual Studies. In 2021, I moved from London (UK) to Victoria, the territory of the lək̓ʷəŋən peoples, to complete my MA and decided to stay for a doctorate.
I am running for Chair because graduate students are an incredible, diverse group who deserve support and representation. I am continually inspired by colleagues who balance full-time jobs, family responsibilities, research, teaching, and community commitments. Graduates’ needs are complex and always changing. If elected, I aim to listen to, understand, and advocate for those needs.
In 2022, I joined the GSS as a volunteer on the Graduate Representative Council. I’ve served on numerous standing committees, supporting events, appeals, communications, and finance. In 2025/6, I became the Director of Internal Relations. These experiences gave me a deep understanding of how the GSS functions and the work it does for graduate students. As a current board member, I have firsthand insight into each director’s role in decision-making, campaigning, and supporting members. I have learned so much from my colleagues, including that advocacy requires time, collegiality, and persistence.
Over the past year, I helped organize Graduate Student Appreciation Week, served as vice-chair of the Advocacy and Campaigns and Appeals Committee. I collaborated on a petition to the Board of Governors calling for a review of the University’s accommodation policies. Additionally, I’m working with campus partners to advocate that the province protect the tuition cap and commits to meaningful, transparent consultation on post-secondary funding.
Across campus, I’ve served on the Faculty of Graduate Studies Council and on Senate Committees for Continuing Studies, Awards, and Learning and Teaching, as well as the Global Community Council. I’m a CUPE4163 Steward and Teaching Assistant, and I previously served as Chair of the AHVS Graduate Association.
As Chair, I would champion graduate students’ interests and ensure the board keeps our members’ needs at the center of our work. I would aim to be a present, supportive leader by collaborating, fostering transparency, and encouraging the team of directors.
If elected, I would prioritize the following:
- Housing: Advocate for affordable on-campus housing and long-term solutions at the university, municipal and provincial levels. Despite the provinces’ cancelling the proposed 510-bed dorm project, our needs have not disappeared. Family housing waitlists remain long, and graduates need safe, affordable homes.
- Affordability: Advocate that the province protects the tuition cap and provide long-term, sustainable funding for post-secondary institutions. Student voices should not be ignored in decisions that directly affect our education and academic freedom.
- Meaningful peer support: Hold leadership accountable for Equity Report recommendations- including implementing peer mentorship programs and more comprehensive orientations, especially for international students. Grad school can be overwhelming, but it doesn’t need to be a mystery! We need support in transitioning to UVic life.
- Supervision policy: Champion transparent and collaborative supervision practice, advocate for clearer timelines, accommodations, and stronger communication standards for supervisors and graduates.
Thank you for your consideration.
Candidate for Director of External Relations
Victor Marrugat Arnal
BIO
Victor (he/him) is a 3rd-year PhD candidate in Electrical Engineering. He has been elected twice as the grad representative for Electrical and Computer Engineering and has served as an active member of the Advocacy and Campaigns committee. During his terms, he has coordinated efforts to clarify the protections of Grad Research Assistants on campus, researched and shared information about health benefits, and communicated with the members of the society about the Provincial Review of Post-Secondary Sector Sustainability. He is known for having a strong Spanish accent while not being fully aware of it, and for overwatering his house plants.
CANDIDATE STATEMENT
We grad students are the backbone of higher education institutions like UVic. We run tutorials and laboratory sessions, we grade assignments, and our research brings reputation to the University. If we stop, the University stops. Yet we appear to be the last priority to the institutions, like the Provincial Government, which ultimately benefit from our largely unrecognized work. Housing is one of the worst problems for the members of our society. Meanwhile, the last BC budget includes a 5-year delay of the planned, and long-fought by the GSS, student housing. Furthermore, the Provincial Review of the Post-Secondary Sector signals the removal of new funding, the removal of the domestic tuition cap, and the substitution of human labour by AI in teaching.
A strong leadership is needed to oppose these measures. After being actively involved in the Advocacy and Campaigns committee, I am well aware of the extremely high potential that the advocacy originating in the GSS has. I would like to coordinate this advocacy through dialogue with other student societies, local administrations, and the provincial government, while stoutly demanding the respect that the members of our Society deserve.
I was also involved in the CUPE Grad Research Assistant (GRA) unionization campaign, which was stalled following the BC Labour Relations Board decision to disregard the successful unionization drive of UBC GRAs. As a Grad Researcher myself, I understand that research is work, work that goes largely unpaid and is, in some occasions, largely unsafe. I am ready to start conversations with unions, student societies, and professional societies across the province to amplify the UVic GRAs’ voice and to potentially coordinate efforts so that our work is recognized and, finally, unionized.
Candidate for Director of Finance
Eleanore Lonsbrough
Hello! My name is Eleanore, and I am running for the position of GSS Director of Finance. I am a 3rd year graduate student in the Physics and Astronomy Department, and I have been involved with the GSS as an events volunteer for most of that time. I admire the work that the GSS does, and I would be thrilled to contribute to the health and further effective functioning of this community.
Principal in the operation of such communities I believe is trust, transparency, and an understanding of the structure of the community and its operations. In my time volunteering with the GSS, at Wednesday coffee and especially at larger events, I have seen the power of the GSS to build strong connections and uplift students. I have also seen the effectiveness of a strong community in my own department, where I have served as an Academic Representative running events focused on building public speaking and organizational skills. I have represented graduate students in our colloquium committee, and as an Astronomy unit representative. I participated in building a student supervisor relationship form, which our department has since implemented, clarifying student and supervisor expectations. Prior to UVic, I was a member of the University of California Santa Cruz Outreach Task Force, which held events connecting students to their departments, and the department to the public, fostering science communication.
If you allow me to, I will bring these experiences to the GSS board as Director of Finance. I would consider it an honor to ensure that the GSS operates a smooth budget and completes the yearly audit with minimal complications.
Sincerely,
Eleanore
