The University of Victoria Educational Employees Union (CUPE local 4163) is made up of approximately 1500 members, most of whom are grad students. The local represents: Teaching Assistants, Second Language Instructors, Sessional Instructors, Lab Instructors, COUS employees, Music Performance Instructors, Cultural Assistants and others. Together, CUPE 4163 members perform more than two thirds of the instruction at the University of Victoria.

Help build a network of campus TAs to keep UVic fair and democratic. You can run for a position on the Executive, serve as a Shop Steward for your department, sit on a committee, or help with bargaining, communications or political action.

Office of the Ombudsperson

UVic`s Office of the Ombudsperson provides confidential, impartial and independent advice and assistance to students who feel let down or unfairly treated within the University system. Problems commonly dealt with include: grade appeals, communication breakdowns, complaints, admission and re-registration appeals, housing difficulties and academic discipline.Graduate students, undergraduates and the university jointly fund and oversee this office, and the GSS Director of Student Affairs is a member of the Ombudsperson’s Advisory Board.

The GSS recommends seeking help from the Ombudsperson first about any problem, particularly issues of fairness.

Your graduate advisor and graduate secretary know the details of your program and degree, and can help you to resolve a number of issues, from registration and course changes to clarifying your program-specific steps and requirements for graduation.
