Board Members & Staff
CHAIR
Wyatt Maddox
The Chair acts as the official spokesperson of the Society. The Chair is the primary liaison between the Society and the University administration and external political bodies. Internally, the Chair heads the Executive Council and the Graduate Representative Council.
DIRECTOR OF STUDENT LIFE
Maggie Lawton
The Director of Services is responsible for planning GSS-sponsored activities and acts as a liaison with student groups. The Director also sits on the Orientation Committee and the Clubs’ Council.
DIRECTOR OF FINANCE
Samuel Fielder
The Director of Finance works with the Executive Director and the Finance Committee to prepare the annual budget for the Society and to ensure the financial health of the GSS. They assist in day-to-day operations, review all Society contracts, and sign the cheques.
DIRECTOR OF EXTERNAL RELATIONS
Jitendra Palaparty
The Director of External Relations is responsible for coordinating advocacy campaigns targeting all levels of government and off-campus partners, supporting the Chair in communications with media outlets, preparing public statements to members on matters related to advocacy campaigns, and provide support, guidance, and direction to volunteers, GRC reps and members on advocacy campaigns.. They chair the Advocacy and Campaigns Committee.
DIRECTOR OF INTERNAL / UNIVERSITY RELATIONS
Rosemary Webb
The Director of Internal/University Relations acts as the primary liaison with members of UVic administration, and between the members of the Executive Board and the University’s Senate and Board of Governors, Faculty of Graduate Studies, and Graduate Executive Committee. They are responsible for coordinating campaigns as directed by the Board which target UVic, and supporting our University partners in providing an annual grad student research day. They serve as Vice-Chair of the Appeals Committee and of the Advocacy and Campaigns Committee.

The Executive Director works with the Executive Council, Society staff and the general membership to ensure the smooth operation of the Society. The Executive Director works closely with the board to manage Society finances, set strategic goals, keep society records, set administrative protocol, and support students.

The Operations and Services Manager works with the Executive Director and Society staff to ensure the restaurant and services of the society are well managed. The Operations and Services Manager manages the restaurant and catering policies, capital and renovations for the building, and manages student services.

The Health and Dental Plan Coordinator negotiates and administers the Society’s Extended Health & Dental Plans.

The GSS has two wonderful Peer Support Workers, Emma Hender and Bhagyashri Khimsuriya, who want to hear from you! If you have questions or concerns about supervision, accommodations, equity, etc., they are here to point you in the right direction, make referrals, and explain policies and procedures to help you navigate university systems. They are also here to help foster student wellness and connections. If you need recommendations for activities and events around campus, they are here for you! Come out to meet them at Wednesday Coffees or send them an email at gsspeers@uvic.ca. Bhagyashri will be at the GSS office Tuesdays and Wednesday from 9-12 for drop in support.
